The Roswinkel pouch

Gepubliceerd op 26 februari 2025 om 11:03

One of our members, Alexander, made a replica of the bag found at Roswinkel in the Netherlands. The Roswinkel find includes a large pouch, a wooden box and several Carolingian coins dated from 793 to 882. The large pouch bears great similarities with the folding wallets found at Iholm and Trelleborg in Denmark and Sigtuna and Birka in Sweden. The thing that sets the Roswinkel pouch apart, however, is it’s size, due to which it comes closer to a bag than a pouch or folding wallet. The placing of the Roswinkel find close to the East-Frisian coast might be seen as an effort to safeguard valuables from Scandinavian raiders. Whatever the reason for deposition was, we’re glad to incorporated this replica in our depiction!
